Final Thing!!! Number 23 :)

I actually really enjoyed doing 23 Things.  I had always been curious about things like blogs, Google Docs, and RSS feeds.  When I found out we were going to make our own blog for these exercises, I got really excited (nerd alert).  I really learned a lot from each lesson and now feel a whole lot more comfortable using and discussing all different kinds of technology. 

I really learn well from doing hands-on kind of stuff.  Although I can be a procrastinator (and finish things the day they are due :)  ), I am very glad it wasn't just taught to us in a training session.

I think patrons could DEFINITELY benefit from this, or something similar to it.  There are so many patrons that come in that don't know the basics of email, how to search for jobs, etc.  I know we have links that they can click on for help, but I think something set up like 23 Things might be better.  Whether or not it would really be used is another thing.

Overall, I really learned a lot from this whole exercise!

NoveList

This website seems really interesting.  I could definitely spend a lot of time looking for new things to read.  I've wanted to get into reading more types of novels, so this would be a great way to investigate new things.  I looked up all kinds of different books.  It's really great that many of them provide the first chapter.  You can really get a sense of whether or not this is a book you would want to read.  Two thumbs up!

BookLetter

For this Thing, I chose to sign up for both Fiction and Non-Fiction bestsellers and the one called Book Sizzle.  These can always be useful when I'm looking for something new and exciting to read (or to recommend for someone else!). 

Thing 20

The book I recommended for this exercise was Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris.  Really good book of short stories!

Thing 19.

Alright.  These on my thoughts on wikis and the library: Perhaps the Job Shop could benefit from a wiki.  It could be like an online Job Club.  Just a place where people could share their job search experience, successes and failures, post helpful links, etc.  Just a thought!

Thing 18

In this Thing, I edited the pages about my favorite book and my favorite TV shows.  It really was pretty easy to edit the page, but I doubt that I will ever be doing this again.  It was interesting to see how it works, though.

I downloaded a book called "The History of the English Language", which is 8 hours, 14 minutes long.

Thing 17:

I looked at lots of different podcasts:  Merriam-Webster Word of the Day, some about music, some about sports, and finally, some about the news.  I tried, but basically I think podcasts are not my thing.  I would much rather read a blog or look at pictures through Google Reader (I suppose I'm more of a visual learner).  It's nice if you want to catch up on a news story, but really, I think I'll never use them.  I'll just stick to my blogs!

RSS Feeds

This week, I subscribed to several blogs!  All quilting, of course.  This Google Reader makes it so much easier for me to keep up to date on stuff.  I'm a big fan :)   This can come in very handy in keeping up with all kinds of information.  Like.

Thing 12

Well, when I was in grad school, the database that I swore by was JSTOR.  I was a huge JSTOR fan.  I could always find full-text articles on exactly what I wanted.  I tried out EBSCO, but never really found it that useful for what I was working on. 

If I had to choose one for the library to keep, I'd probably say EBSCO, actually.  It seems to have such offer such a broad range of info.  I didn't really know all I could do with it before.

          British Journal for the History of Philosophy - full-text articles from March 01, 1998 through the present can be accessed through EBSCO (Academic Search Premiere), although there is a 12 month delay.

11b).  Consumer Reports articles about LCD tv's can be found on EBSCO.  There are two full-text articles from both 2008 and 2009. 

11c).  I found 94 coffee shops that are located in all 402- zip codes.  Specifically in 40202, there are 10.  Watch out for Starbucks!!!

Photo Sharing

Of course, with me being a fan of craftiness, the first thing I decided to search was "modern quilts".  This search returned many brightly colored results.  Will be using this more often!

But, when it comes to using Flickr as a reference tool, it could be a bit more tricky.  This tool wouldn't really come in handy in the Job Shop.  However, I could really see it being useful for any kind of research project.

Social Networks

Facebook is old news, so I focused more on Twitter and Linkedin.  Working in the Job Shop, Linkedin might come in handy.  I noticed they do have a section about jobs that might interest you AND shows you where you can apply.  This could definitely be useful.

As far as the whole social networking thing goes, I still can't really get into it.  Facebook is good for keeping up with friends and family, but Twitter just does not interest me at all.  I think it's just something that may not be for everyone.

Thing #4:


Personally, after looking at all that Google has to offer, I'd probably use Picasa?  Maybe.  I do enjoy taking pictures, so it might be fun to share those with family and friends.  To be honest, I doubt that I would really use these technologies outside of work, BUT it is cool to know they are there.  


In the Job Shop, some of these features would come in pretty handy.   Google Docs and Google Maps would definitely be useful when helping people in their job search.
